But he’s just over a month away from making history again, as he needs to hold the SmackDown Grand Championship for another 42 days (starting on Monday) in order to become the longest-running Universal Champion of all time. Lesnar still holds the record for most cumulative days with gold at 688 days, despite having made three stints compared to Roman’s tenure.
Reigns debuted as ‘Tribal Chief’ in 2020 summerslam pay-per-view, attacking “The Fiend” Bray Wyatt and Braun Strowman after the main event of the show. Then he won the championship one week later in payment Pay per view and haven’t been affected by install or loss since then.

En route to his record-breaking title, Reigns successfully defended his title against J. Uso, Strowman, Kevin Owens, Daniel Bryan, Edge, Cesaro, Rey Mysterio, John Cena, Finn Balor, Lesnar, Sami Zayn, Seth Rollins, and Goldberg . It is not clear if he will defend the two titles separately, as a single double belt championship, or debut an entirely new belt as a unified world champion.
However, Reigns revealed in a recent interview with ESPN that he would have been leaving the company during his 2020 hiatus had he not been allowed to bring his new character into “mostly unscripted” WWE programming. He explained, “I’ve kept coming back to ‘The Force’, I just want to be seen as the strongest superstar of all time, when it comes to WWE and sports entertainment. I really wanted to convey this image of strength. Almost like a mafia-style force. Not just respect, But they fear me.” That’s why originality was invaluable.
